Oh what a night…

March Madness…I know, it’s only January, but last night, in addition to seeing a tough fought game between Indiana University (IU) and Wisconsin, I had the honor of watching the celebration of the 1976 UNDEFEATED, NCAA Men’s Championship Team and the unveiling of a new banner at Assemby Hall!

I know everyone in the audience was hoping to see the legendary Bob Knight walk onto the court, but if you know anything of his reputation…you know he wasn’t going to show…but you could feel his presence.

Knight was there when all those players from that magical team sat in a row and talked about the team, the season, each other — and couldn’t stop talking about the man who brought them together and unleashed them on the unsuspecting world of college basketball.

Assembled were all manner of members of Knight’s 1976 program. Trainers, assistant coaches, student managers. A woman who sang the national anthem. More than 40 people were invited from 1976, and all but a handful came. Nine of the 12 players still alive returned — Buckner, May, Benson, Wilkerson, Tom Abernethy, Jim Crews, Wayne Radford, Jim Roberson and Scott Eells — and the three no-shows expressed their regrets. Jim Wisman is in Europe, IU athletic director Fred Glass said, and Rich Valavicius and Bob Bender had previous commitments. (Mark Haymore died in 2004.)

What a fun night and so blessed to have this memory (thanks Elizabeth for getting Mary the tickets for Christmas and thanks Mary for taking me along!)…I mean, I was young when this happened, but still remember watching the season and being amazed by this feat…others have tried, but none have yet to accomplish…Go Hoosiers!

Time for the Men’s Big Ten Tourney…

…and we are hosting it right here in Indy!  Are you going?  As an Indiana fan, I’m disappointed in their performance this season, but I am not a fair weather fan and will continue cheering them on despite their record this season.

2014 is the ninth time Indianapolis has hosted the Tourney and the first game tips off at noon on Thursday with 8th seeded Indiana taking on 9th seeded Illinois…click here for the brackets to follow all the games!

The Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament has only been around 16-years, sellout crowds, exciting and competitive games, national television coverage and throngs of media have been highlights of past years tournaments.  Since the beginning of the tournament, the Big Ten has  has had 6 teams crowned champion. Ohio State leads all Big Ten schools with 4 (2007, 2010, 2011, 2013), followed by Michigan State with 3 (1999, 2000, 2001). Illinois 2 (2003, 2005), Iowa 2 (2001, 2006) and Wisconsin 2 (2004, 2008), and Purdue 1 in 2009.

Just remember, while each team participates in the tournament and the winner receives the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, but the team (or teams) that finish at the top of the regular-season standings is the Big Ten Champion. The bracket is seeded according to the final regular-season standings with the conference champion earning the top seed and the top four finishers receiving first-round byes.

Not going to the games, you can find the games covered by 4 different networks.  BTN will carry the opening 2 games as well as 2 primetime games on Friday.  ESPN2 will cover Thursday’s primetime matchups, ESPN will carry Friday’s afternoon games and CBS Sports takes over on Saturday for the semifinals and Sunday’s championship game.

So…are you going to the Fieldhouse to catch your favorite team?

Wish # 11

My eleventh wish is that we allow ourselves more spontaneity in our lives and be more lighthearted, it is important to see the joy in your life.  What was the last thing you did on the spur of the moment?  Sometimes, I will go to a movie in the middle of the day…just because I can!  As a Realtor, I work a lot of crazy hours so when I find myself with a couple of unscheduled hours in the middle of the day, I might stop by and catch a flick!

A couple of years ago, a friend and I went to the IU vs. OSU game in Bloomington, IN on New Years Eve.  We had decided on the way down where we wanted to have dinner after the game and made reservations…but as we neared Assembly Hall, we saw signs for the French Lick Casino and I jokingly said since we were already half way there, we should go.  When the game was over, we decided “what the heck”, cancelled our reservations, hit White Castle for dinner and a couple of ATM‘s for cash and headed South instead of North to Indy!

We had a blast, we got home at 6 a.m. after gambling all night (coming out winners – my friend $90 and me $120 – what do you expect, we play the Penny slots!) and stopping for breakfast at a roadside dinner (now that was an interesting experience!).  It was one of my most memorable New Years, it’s fun to be spontaneous!

Have fun, be open to new experiences and be willing to go with the flow…you’ll be amazed at the joy you will find in your life.
