Historic Irvington Home Tour!

I’m so excited…this spring, I was able to work with my friend Kate Bilyj in the purchase of a Co-op in her dream area of Irvington and drum role please…her unit has been chosen to be on the Irvington Benton House Tour of Homes on Sunday, September 15, 2013!

This tour showcases the history, charm, and architecture of Irvington neighborhoods.  In it’s 40th year, this tour brings inspiration, education, and home improvement ideas to the.  Guests can enjoy viewing the properties of homeowners who truly fuel the Irvington neighborhoods. Many of the homeowners not only live in Irvington, but, invest further in the development of this 143 year old community.

Featured on this years tour is a beautiful ranch with a three room conversion into a dream kitchen. Recent bathroom renovations, and a finished basement.  In the Irvington Terrace area is a charming tudor with unique architecture, original details, and beautiful front and back gardens. Also on view will be a chic bungalow where budget and hip design style play a central role in creating an inspired home. The newly constructed Irvington Lofts are also included on the tour. Kate’s unit is in the Co-op neighborhood of Maplewood Court and boasts many of the original features including my favorite part…the original doorbell!

As part of the 40th anniversary celebration, there will be a tour/hog roast celebration at the Downey Avenue Christian Church, a complimentary cupcake as well as music and festivities on the lawn of the Benton House.

The home tour is the largest fundraising event for the historic Benton House, raising funds for the preservation of the 140 year old landmark. What started 40 years ago as a group of eager neighbors opening their homes for neighbors to tour and share ideas has now turned into the longest consecutively ran home tour in the city of Indianapolis showcasing nearly 200 homes and landmarks over the years.

The 2013 self guided Irvington Tour of Homes starts at noon and continues until 5:00pm on September 15, 2013. Biking and walking is encouraged. Tickets are $12 advance, $15 the day of the tour. Children under 12 years of age are admitted free.

Tickets can be purchased starting August 28 at local Irvington shops and restaurants to include Central Ace Hardware, Dufour’s, Black Sheep Gifts, Snips and Bookmamas. Why do we “Spring Forward”?

It’s that time again…time to “spring forward”!  I grew up in Madison, Indiana in the days when the majority of Indiana didn’t change time!  Remember, this is during the dark days when living in the country meant whatever television channels you could pick up on the antenna, in our house, it was NBC and CBS, (that’s right, I never saw Happy Days or Laverne and Shirley until I went to college!) both out of Louisville and when time changed, prime time programming started at 7:00 p.m.!  And scheduling doctor appointments in Louisville was challenging because you had to schedule on “fast time” when you lived on “slow time”, heck, there is a bridge in Madison so socializing and working between the states is common…wedding invitations even used the terms, imagine, getting a wedding invitation that said 5:30 p.m. (slow time)!

So why do we do this?  Daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the second Sunday in November throughout most of the United States and Canada. This is supposed to provide more daylight hours in the evening during the summer months.

There are a lot of stories about who proposed the time change and why, first up…In 1895, a postal clerk and entomology hobbyist in New Zealand named George Vernon Hudson was the first to propose a daylight saving time schedule so he could have more time after his shift to catch insects. Then a Londoner named William Willet proposed a daylight saving time schedule in 1905 so that he would have more time to play golf during the summer. While both of the proposals gained attention, neither led to the adoption of a daylight saving time practice.

According to history, the first time daylight saving time was put into practice was in 1916 by Germany and their allies during World War I as a means to save coal for the war effort. The rest of Europe quickly followed with  Russia being the last to implement in 1917, after the abdication of Czar Nicholas II.  The United States adopted daylight savings in 1918 after becoming heavily involved in the war effort.

In the United States, following the war, the practice of daylight saving time was left up to state and local governments (boy was that a mistake!) and quickly led to chaos as neighboring communities often had different daylight saving time start and end dates, while other communities decided not to observe daylight saving time at all. The mass confusion led to the Uniform Time Act of 1966. The act standardized the daylight saving time practice, but allowed for state’s and local governments to petition for exemption.

You know why I like it right?  As a Realtor, showing Buyer’s homes in the daylight allows us to see the curb appeal, the neighborhood of the homes for sale…My Seller’s like it for that reason too!  Seller’s work hard to make their home attractive inside and out, it’s better if Buyer’s can see it!  The market is moving quickly, I’m hearing stories every day from agents in our office that homes are selling within days of going on the market! What a way to start the year…

During the wee hours of Sunday morning, at least 2 people (possibly more) took it upon themselves to break into our KW Realty office!  This is not a stand alone building, we are on the second floor of a really nice building at Keystone at the Crossing in Indianapolis!  Ocean Prime is right downstairs and Distinctive Diamonds is in the parking lot!  Our office is really nice – we have Smart TV‘s throughout, shared desktop computers as well as others behind locked doors and the office had just purchased our last Sony Smart TV, 55″ with a webcam…very nice right?

Not much was taken, some cash, a few cameras, an expensive watch…oh and that brand new 55″ Sony Smart TV that was still in the box.  What bothers me the most was the ransacking of the space…every office that was locked was broken in to, chairs were overturned, files scattered, locked cabinets forced open, doors broken, they even took two imported beers from the fridge!  As Realtors, we are in and out of the office all the time, odd hours, odd days, now it feels unsafe.  What a mess!

My question is…why?  I told my Mom about it and her outraged response was “why couldn’t they just get a job like everyone else?”  I think it is a great question!  Can you imagine our society if those who put so much effort into getting “money for nothing” actually took all that effort and put it into working for a living!  What do you think?  I would love to hear your thoughts.
